Tororo Municipality has officially flagged off 30 road gang members to various workstations across the town, tasking them with maintaining cleanliness and improving sanitation standards.
The flag-off ceremony was presided over by the Town Clerk, Ayub Kisubi, at the municipal council chambers on Wednesday.
The municipality recently recruited 18 new road gang members and two headmen to join the existing team of 10 workers, expanding the workforce responsible for solid waste management, bush clearing along roads, and maintenance of service lanes throughout the municipality.
Before deployment, the workers underwent an induction conducted by municipal officials, including Municipal Engineer Francis Okema and Senior Human Resource Officer Irene Achola, to prepare them for their responsibilities.
Addressing the team, Achola urged the workers to uphold high standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism while carrying out their duties.
“You are ambassadors of Tororo Municipality. Conduct yourselves responsibly and professionally so that you do not tarnish the image of the municipality,” she said.
Engineer Okema emphasized the critical role the road gang plays in making Tororo a clean, attractive, and progressive municipality.
“The work you are going to do is very important. A clean environment enhances the image of our town and contributes to its development,” Okema noted.
Deputy Town Clerk Okoth Kitong encouraged the workers to serve with patriotism and commitment, urging them to take pride in transforming the face of Tororo Municipality.
“You should work with patriotic hearts and dedication because the people of Tororo expect a cleaner and better municipality,” Kitong said.
Town Clerk Kisubi congratulated the newly recruited workers upon their successful appointment, noting that the recruitment process was transparent and merit-based.
He revealed that the municipality had equipped the road gang members with personal protective equipment, including gumboots, gloves, and helmets, to enable them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
Kisubi, however, warned the workers against reporting for duty while under the influence of alcohol, saying such behavior would attract immediate dismissal.
“We shall not tolerate indiscipline. Anyone who reports to work drunk risks losing their job instantly,” he cautioned.
He further pledged to hold regular meetings with the Works Department to assess the performance of the road gang and address any challenges affecting their operations.
The 30 road gang members were recruited from all eight parishes of Tororo Municipality and are expected to provide sanitation and environmental maintenance services across the municipality.
